Let's talk about investing

InvestRight blog blocks

Meet the bloggers

Andy

As a former journalist, I have a healthy appetite for news and information. What I find most useful to me are pieces that help put events and changes into context – imparts meaning if you will. Sure, I like the catchy headlines and shocking visuals, who doesn’t? But for this blog, I want to share with you news and happenings that will hopefully help you understand better how investment fraud can claim victims. As well, I will look to share useful investing news and tips when I come upon them.

I used to practice magical thinking when it came to money, living a perfectly fulfilling life with only the haziest notion of my financial future. When my communications career led me to the BCSC I suddenly had the opportunity to think, write, and talk about investing matters every day. This gave me a special interest in helping people get more involved in their finances. Bad things very often do happen to good people and their finances, sometimes just because they lack basic financial literacy and sometimes because they don't know what to ask or forget who (you!) should be in charge. If InvestRight can help you bridge the gap between what you know and what else you need to know to protect your financial interests, then it's doing its job. And, if it is, please let us know.

I’m a long way from retirement and certainly fall into the passive investor category. As part of the BCSC's knowledge management group and a trained librarian, I’m all about making information accessible through our websites. I'm primarily interested in the technical components of the blog and the InvestRight site, but I’ve also made use of InvestRight’s content in my own quest to become a more hands-on investor. I’m specifically interested in getting investor feedback on how to improve our websites  (InvestRightBCSC new window, and Planning 10 new window)  and making our web tools and online information as findable and useful as possible.

As a boomer about to retire, I have had an interesting career in communications – in book publishing, in the energy and healthcare sector, and in consulting to companies and to governments. I started working at the BC Securities Commission several years ago. As Director of Communications & Education, I have seen the whole field of investor education and financial literacy grow in importance. Since the credit crunch began, we are seeing investors become more inquisitive about their own investments and more demanding of their advisors. After Madoff and Earl Jones, I am also seeing investors more concerned about investment fraud. The InvestRight blog is our way of reaching out to investors with timely and relevant information.
