City of Surrey’s Focus on Seniors forums
Last month, we ran a four-part blog series to raise awareness around the financial abuse of elders. Even though June 15 is officially World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we want to reach out to let people know there is information available to them year-round.
One great example is the City of Surrey’s Seniors Advisory and Accessibility Committee (SAAC). It facilitates forums throughout the year to address the issue of abuse and neglect of elders in the community.
Volunteers representing various city departments, safety services (fire and police), senior support services, related community groups and individuals come together with passion and resources to offer all-day forums that are free of charge to Surrey’s senior residents.
This innovative model allows this diverse group to share their information and resources with seniors, caregivers and families on physical, emotional and financial abuse. It also helps establish a strong working relationship with outside agencies, like the BC Securities Commission, which is trying to reach seniors where they live through its InvestRight education program.
The City of Surrey offers these forums in a variety of languages including English, Punjabi, Korean, Urdu, and Mandarin, which extends their reach and popularity. In fact, these forums are so popular, they are often booked up well in advance.
InvestRight is proud to be a part of this successful program to raise awareness on the dangers of investment fraud. These forums are a great fit for our Be Fraud Aware campaign, which focuses on seniors and pre-retirees, who are the most vulnerable to investment schemes.
We travel the province throughout the year, and we are always interested in participating in events or forums that focus on seniors and pre-retirees. If your community offers these kinds of outreach events this audience, we would like to hear from you.
