Canadian Securities Administrators Enforcement Report 2017/18

The 2017/18 Enforcement Report covers enforcement activities from securities regulators across Canada, including the BC Securities Commission.

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) published its Enforcement Report for 2017/18. The report covers enforcement activities from securities regulators across Canada, including the BCSC.

This year’s Enforcement Report focuses on how CSA members worked together to meet evolving regulatory challenges.

Some highlights from the report include:

  • 124 respondents were placed under interim cease-trade, asset-freeze orders or both, preventing further harm to investors
  • 43 years of jail time was ordered by the courts for individuals in both quasi-criminal and Criminal Code cases

New Technology, Credit Cards, Binary Options, Cryptocurrencies, & More

The Enforcement Report also details how CSA members enhanced investor protection and regulatory compliance in Canada. Three areas were of particular focus this year: technology and credit card companies; binary options; and cryptocurrencies and initial coin offerings (ICOs).
